Zoila is a woman of 33 years who was born in the village of Pile, a site of Montecristi in Manabi Province. She says since his 19 years she learned the business that now provides for her whole family: weaving the genuine panama hats.
The story begins when Zoila married the love of her life. She tell us that she saw her mother in law weaving and she immediately became interested in learning this wonderful but time-effort-consuming art.
She began practicing on a mat of straw leaves, and when she learned to do it right she decided to start weaving real hats. Although she has not yet learn to the start weaving the hat from the very beginning, she has 15 years dedicated to the artisan work.
Zoila daily since dedicated time to perform the entire process to make this fine article from boiling the straw, to perfumed and frayed it with sulfur, to then get the panama hat a work of art, which is clearly manabita (Ecuador).
But even she says is tiring work, ”especially because your back hurts,” Zoila who loves weaving hats says “the most beautiful thing is to see a finished panama hat, it gives joy.”
