South America has the best balsa wood in the world. The balsa tree is known as the “Ochroma Lagopus”. The perfect tropical climate in the jungle of South America because it has a constant humid temperature all year round. The balsa tree will mature within 5 years with a trunk girth diameter of about 500mm. These trees can grow to a height of 18 meters.

Because they are a fast growing tree they are the lightest wood species in the world. Their cell structure is actually known as a hardwood. It is not an endangered species because of the rapid growth rate and after 5 years they don’t grow much more. Once a tree is felled the seeds of the balsa wood which sit in a cotton type nest in the branches is scattered onto the ground and usually regrowth occurs 10 fold.

Other qualities of the South American Balsa:

• Pale and pink colours
• Light weight
• Stable working capabilities
• Glueing with P.V.A. is very easy
• Largest section size is 150mm x 100mm x 3m and 150mm x 100mm x 4m
• Can be cut into any size using basic tools
