Zero tolerance for hunting of elephants in Gabon

More than 1,200 ivory tusks were publicly burned as a sign of the struggle that is taking place Gabon poaching of elephants.

On the initiative of President of Gabon, Ali Bongo a huge pyre was lit in the capital of the southern African country, as a rejection of indiscriminate hunting of elephants in the region.

The illegal killing of elephants for ivory is at record levels on this side of the planet, although nature has bestowed from vegetable ivory tagua, and which can produce the same products with the same quality as vegetable ivory.

The tagua a palm that becomes a “jewel”

The tagua seed born of a wild palm whose scientific name is Phytelephas aequatorialis, also known as vegetable ivory, palm produces annually fifteen mocochas, which are ears that have a hard shell with projections, which protects about thirty seeds or nuts, of which the collars are made. DSC00091

After passing through dryers, polishers, cutters, polishers and dyeing section, the rustic seed, hard, black outside and white and beige on the inside, it becomes part of necklaces, earrings, bracelets and other items in the current source of income for many Ecuadorians.

Sosote native of the province of Manabi – Ecuador, says he grew up watching their parents make pieces of tagua, at the age of 12 years his creativity was awakened and began to develop the tagua jewelry, smiling confesses that to reach first had to clean it, sanding, shaping tagua every day until the day came as waiting when his mother Roxana gave beads to display their creativity.

Tagua jewelryLucia is an Ecuadorian of 30 years. Luci started to create accessories with tagua because her parents inspired her. Their work showed her a different face of jewelry making. A labor of love, dedication and sacrifice.

When did you start with this hobby?
From my childhood.

Tell us how you started?
My parents worked with tagua, making beads. It seemed incredible to me that tagua is first an fruit and then it could be transformed into beautiful crafts and jewelry.

At first, I liked to help to clean up the tagua nuts. Then, as I was growing, my creativity and imagination started to rise. Today, creating jewelry  is my job, my livelihood.

Tell us three artists that inspire you.
Uffff only 3, it would be difficult but the ones I like are Mirela Sheza, Juan Fernando Velazco, Fausto Mino

How many hours a week to dedicate this work?
Many … of course without letting down my family, which is one of the reasons why I work.

What other hobbies do you have?
Cross Stitch, making ornaments with coconut, corn, in short, everything that is creativity.

Want to tell us something about your life?
I am a mother of 1 girl of 5. I am someone who does not like the lies, hypocrisy. I usually say what I think, I like cleaning and I laugh a lot. I could go on but would have to spend hours … lol … just kidding
