Center to preserve the tradition of weaving straw hats “Panama Hats”

22panama2Under the theme of “learning to work working” the National Institute of Cultural Heritage aims to preserve the making of straw hats.

The creation of the Knowledge Transfer Centre is the first step that the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, implemented in Gauteng to ensure that the construction of the Panama Hat (Montecristi Hat) not be forgotten.

In the commune of Montecristi Pile under the theme “Learning to work at work”, it is expected that the tradition of weaving straw hats , part of the country’s intangible cultural heritage is not lost in history. According to many models weavers and most are elderly and few young people who are interested in learning this craft that is part of the culture and country around.

In addition to this project is to improve the employability of people who acquire new knowledge, including the hat to finish counting the proper tools, thus avoiding the middlemen.

Junior chronicle of a real fighter

P1000851Junior Lopez is 17 years old, he lives in the town of Montecristi Pile in the province of Manabi, is the third of five brothers, comes from a family of weavers in straw hats and their profession is that, developing the famous Panama Hat.

Junior’s story begins with the dreams and illusions of all children to grow up and be somebody in life, he longed to be an engineer, but as pointed out in his own words, “from time to time all dreams were dashed” .

Was 7 years old when it happened, and somewhat saddened eyes said, “One day we went walking with my dad and a car hit us, I ran over and broke my hip and leg,” since life This young man took an unexpected turn, due to the accident some of his organs were compromised, and in critical condition and little hope of recovery, Junior had to endure the hard pounding that life had given him and start a battle against death.

The straw hat scarf in world history

22panama2 The straw hat scarf, also called Panama Hat is a straw hat, hand woven palm leaves or straw Jipijapa scarf.

Paradoxically, despite its name, THE AUTHENTIC BUT NOT COME FROM THE PANAMA ECUADOR, the village of Pile in the Manabi province led to the creations that have become a boom in manufacturing of fashion in the world.

There are different versions regarding the term “Panama Hat”, one of the most widespread is that were imported into that country for use by workers involved in building the Panama Canal to guard against dehydration by high heat .

The photo of President Roosevelt in one of his visits to work wearing this hat Canal turned the world, baptizing in the name of the country for posterity.

DID YOU KNOW Panama Hats have starred in Hollywood films?

hollywoodIn 1944 sales of panama hats reached its peak, becoming the number one export product of Ecuador due to the decrease of cocoa.

But without doubt one of the main reasons why the sales have increased was the golden age of Hollywood. Was at this period of time that many film-stars used the then called Panama Hat (because it was thought that came from that country) inside and outside of the screen more popular usage of the accessory.

The Panama Hat,was the protagonist in the costumes of some of the most famous films of that era and today are classified as treasures of cinema.

And if we talk of naming starrings, the role that the hat did in the movie Gone with the Wind, was one of the best work.  But the action it took in Casablanca and Key Largo is also worthy of applause.

Zoila Lopez, "I like to weave straw panama hats. It is the nicest thing to see it finished, it gives joy"Zoila is a woman of 33 years who was born in the village of Pile, a site of Montecristi in Manabi Province. She says since his 19 years she learned the business that now provides for her whole family: weaving the genuine panama hats.

The story begins when Zoila married the love of her life. She tell us that she saw her mother in law weaving and she immediately became interested in learning this wonderful but time-effort-consuming art.

She began practicing on a mat of straw leaves, and when she learned to do it right she decided to start weaving real hats. Although she has not yet learn to the start weaving the hat from the very beginning, she has 15 years dedicated to the artisan work.

From a young age and then with my husband. Now I only sell crafts and when some one makes a special request I weave a hat. But I teach this art to my children.
What weaving means to you?
It was my way of life for some years. It is a hard work full of taste, which requires a lot of energy and detail.

I am a mother of four children, and I am proud that the best hat in the world is of Montecristi, because although it is not much try to do the same. The design here is unique, handmade and special treatment.

art. analizadoAn article published in the journal The Agro called “Sombreros de Montecristi o Panamá Hats“, describes a beautiful reality but hard at the same time.

It is true that the most famous straw hat of the world is the product of painstaking Ecuadorian hands and raw material obtained from the east coast and mountains of Ecuador. However, it is known as Panama or Panama Hats.

I was saying that it is a really great and beautiful reality. Yes! The quality of this product has grown to fame and recognition unique in the world. And it belongs to us and them. Humble artisans work-spinning the dreams forged shawl, which back bent shape life. So it is our people with guts and determination.

Also added, is a harsh reality because the ecuadorian work is named as “Panama”. But then everything falls under its own weight. It has been released today and little by little it is known the Panama Hats are Ecuadorian.

Skilled hands that produce straw hats for export, The Genuine Panama Hats

Rough hands and sometimes wrinkled over time shape the strands quality-export Genuine Panama Hats used by world leaders, Hollywood stars, music stars and other celebrities. These have now become a symbol of elegance, luxury and sophistication.

Straw Hats “Panama Hats”: Process and Techniques

• Treatment of the fiber.

• Sales of buds ready for weaving the hat.

• Hat weaving.

The straw hat consists of three parts: body, crown and brim. Weaving starts with the body and in in the center it has a circular shape. To weave the body and the brim no instrument is required. However, it is essential to use a block to shape the hat.

As mentioned previously, the artisan sends the semi-elaborated hat to the city where the hat is finished (remate). Once the hat is finished (remate) it is washed and perfumed, using the same process when treating the fiber. The crown of the hat is accommodated on a block with a leather headband around it. Panama Hats or Montecristi HatsEcuador is world famous for the quality of their straw hats. These arise from the ability of artisans/weavers, mostly women of the provinces of Manabi, Cañar, Guayas and Esmeraldas. For hat weaving you can use the tender leaves or the bark of the paja toquilla plant, a kind of an African palm.

The basic raw material for manufacturing straw hats is the Carludovica Palmata. Which is grown in the mountainous parts of the East and of the Coast of Ecuador, provinces of Manabi, Guayas, Esmeraldas and Morona Santiago (Gualaquiza). » Read more: Panama Hats or Montecristi Hats
